STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – New York City plows are working to keep roads clear as a major blizzard continues to dump inches of snow across the five boroughs, including on Staten Island.
As inches of snow fall every hour, the city Department of Sanitation is trying to keep up as plows roll out to keep major roads clear, according to the city’s PlowNYC map.
The map tracks progress and shows when a road was last plowed by the Sanitation Department’s snow removal vehicles. It updates every 15 minutes.
Staten Island’s highways, including the Staten Island Expressway, West Shore Expressway, Korean War Veterans Parkway, and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Expressway are all consistently plowed within the last hour.
Major roads, such as Forest Avenue, Victory Boulevard, Richmond Avenue, Hylan Boulevard, Richmond Road, and Amboy Road, are being prioritized by plows, according to the PlowNYC map.
Secondary and tertiary roads, which include many side streets and residential areas, are being plowed at a slower pace.
According to the map, many roads are being plowed within an hour, or within one to three hours. Residential areas are seeing plows within three to six hours or even six to 12 hours.
If you want to keep track of plowed roads, you can visit plownyc.cityofnewyork.us/plownyc. Simply type in your address or zoom in on the map to see when roads were most recently plowed.
Residents should be reminded that a plowed or salted street will not show blacktop right away. You can submit a service request by going to portal.311.nyc.gov or calling 311.
