It took nine years, but the RDP Queens curling team found its way back to the top of the podium.
The Queens captured the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association women’s curling national title in Regina over the week, the first for the program since 2017.
The Queens, who were also national champions in 2014 and bronze medalists in 2020, had only one loss at nationals on the way to the national championship victory this time around.
They edged provincial rival SAIT 6-5 in the final to capture gold. The Queens held a 3-1 advantage through four ends, before SAIT broke through and scored two to tie the game. RDP responded with two in the sixth to go ahead 5-3, before SAIT scored singles in the eighth and ninth to tie the game. The Queens scored the winning point with hammer in the ninth to win 6-5.
In the semis, the Queens got some revenge, knocking off the provincial champion Concordia Thunder in a game that came down to the final stone.
After Red Deer took a 3–0 lead in the second end of the semis, Concordia fought back to within one point twice during the match. The Queens scored a single point in the eighth end to hold off the Thunder’s comeback attempt.
Concordia beat the Queens 4-3 in an extra end in the provincial final earlier this month.
Red Deer’s lone loss was a 6-4 defeat by the Niagara College Knights (4-6) in Draw 9. They beat the Assinibone Cougars (12-3), SAIT (7-4), PacWest (7-2), Humber (6-4), Mohawk (7-3), Concordia (6-3), Concordia (6-5) and SAIT (6-5) on the road to the title.
