What Does It Mean to Be a First-Generation Student?
A first-generation college student is typically someone who is the first in their immediate family to attend college and/or whose parents or guardians did not complete a four-year degree in the United States. But beyond definition, being first-generation carries a deeper meaning: it represents courage, persistence, and the power to create change.
“Reaching this educational milestone is not only a culmination of your personal determination and courageous leaps, but a testament to the sacrifices of those who came before you and a symbol of hope for those who will follow,” shares Mr. Garcia. “That responsibility can feel heavy at times, but you don’t carry it alone.”
That shared sense of resilience and pride comes to life through stories like Miguel’s, a first-generation St. John’s University student who turned challenges into motivation and found his place in a supportive community. Read his full story.
Our Promise to You

“The first-gen experience can be exciting, nerve-wracking, and everything in between,” Mr. Garcia said. “At St. John’s, we are here to honor your story, uplift your voice, and celebrate your journey.”
Through the “I Know and I Promise” video below, the University demonstrates its commitment to first-generation students and promises to honor the spirit of community and resilience.
