STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Kingston High indoor track and field athletes won four medals and broke two school records participating in the fifth annual Ocean Breeze Elite Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.

Junior Hazel Lewis continued her streak of breaking girls’ indoor school records by breaking her own Kingston High mark in the 1,000-meter run when she finished second in a time of 2 minutes, 54.92 seconds.

Lewis’ previous school record in the event was 2:57.77, which she established during the 2024-25 season.

“Having more room to warm up helped me feel more prepared for the race,” Lewis said when asked about competing at the Ocean Breeze facility for the first time this season. “My time makes me feel very excited to see what I can do at the (state) qualifying meet.”

This was the fourth straight meet in February where Lewis has broken a Tigers’ school record. Previously this month, she broke school records in the 800- and 1,500-meter runs, and as a part of the school’s distance medley relay quartet.

Lewis ranks first in Section 9 in both the 1,000- and 1,500-meter runs.

Sophomore Kai’Lynn Hagen broke her own girls’ indoor school record in the 60-yard dash with a time of 8.14 seconds. She eclipsed her previous mark of 8.4 seconds.

This was the third time this month that Hagen broke a school record. She broke the girls’ indoor long jump record twice in February.

“It feels great to see the progress that I am making, and I am going to stay confident when I’m performing,” Hagen said.

Hagen will compete in the 55-meter dash, the 300-meter dash, and the long jump at the state indoor track and field qualifier.

Maeve Paul registered a four-second personal-best time of 3:04.12 to earn sixth in the 1,000-meter run. It was her first appearance at the Ocean Breeze facility.

“The new experience allowed for a positive distraction and helped me gain confidence to run my best time ever,” Paul said.

Paul now ranks seventh in Section 9 in the 1,000-meter run.

Charlotte McFarland also earned a medal in the 3,000-meter run, finishing fourth with a time of 10:53.34. She ranks seventh in Section 9 in the event.

On the boys side for the Tigers, Marcode Campbell ran a personal-best time of 35.7 seconds to finish third in the 300-meter dash for the Emerging Elite section.

Shortly after the 300-meter event, Campbell made the finals of the 60-meter dash in a time of 7.14 seconds. He finished eighth in the finals with a time of 7.27 seconds.

Campbell ranks third in Section 9 in the 55-meter dash and ninth in the 300-meter run.

The Tigers will compete in the Section 9 state qualifying meet Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Nike Track and Field Center at The Armory in New York City.

Kingston High athletes will be trying to qualify for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Boys and Girls Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday, March 6 and 7, at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
