A St. Lawrence County man is facing a charge of grand larceny, stemming from an investigation that started in October 2025. New York State Police charged Darin Collins, of Winthrop, on Feb. 20 for allegedly stealing an excavator from a work site on County Route 48 in the town of Stockholm. The theft was reported on Oct. 9. Police said the excavator was equipped with a GPS tracking system, but it lost connection the night it was taken.The excavator was eventually located in Snye, Quebec, on the Canadian portion of the Akwesasne Reservation. Tribal Police assisted the investigation. Police determined that Collins was responsible for stealing the excavator and leaving it in Quebec.An arrest warrant was issued for Collins. He was later located, arrested and processed at the state police barracks in Massena. He was held without bail at the St. Lawrence County Jail following his arraignment.
