WASHINGTON (TNND) — New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani faced backlash for saying that identification was needed for an emergency snow shoveler program as a winter storm hit the city.
Over the weekend, Mamdani requested New Yorkers sign up to become emergency snow shovelers, but paperwork would be required.
“For those who want to do more to help your neighbors and earn some extra cash, you too can become an emergency snow shoveler,” Mamdani said during a press release briefing on Saturday.
“Just show up at your local sanitation garage with your paperwork which is accessible online.”
There are no less than five forms of ID to bring if New Yorkers want to shovel snow, according to the New York Post.
The New York Sanitation Department requests applicants bring two forms of IDs, plus copies and a social security card.
House Republicans mocked Mamdani on X following his remarks.
“Let’s get this straight: in Zohran Mamdani’s socialist utopia, it takes 2 forms of ID to SHOVEL SNOW, but no ID to vote,” House Republicans wrote on X. “Make it make sense.”
Comedian Jimmy Failla also mocked Mamdani.
“Zohran Mamdani requiring TWO forms of ID to be a voluntary shoveler for the blizzard,” he wrote on X.
“This is Jim SNOW 2.0”
The popular X account, Libs of TikTok, said this was something you couldn’t make up.
“Mamdani is now begging New Yorkers to sign up to shovel snow after mountains of snow and garbage were left on the streets for weeks,” the account post reads. “He asks people to register online to shovel snow which requires ID. ID to shovel snow but no ID to vote. You can’t make this up.”
Indiana GOP Rep. Marlin Stutzman called Mamdani’s request hypocritical.
“Mamdani opposes the SAVE America Act for requiring ID at the polls — but sees nothing excessive about requiring proof of citizenship AND multiple forms of ID to volunteer part-time SHOVELING SNOW!?” he wrote on X. “Liberal hypocrisy! This is why we need to establish consistency across states’ voting laws.”
