NEW YORK – New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is holding a news conference Wednesday as the city digs out from a record-breaking blizzard.
What we know:
The storm buried neighborhoods across the five boroughs, with Staten Island reporting nearly 30 inches of snow in some areas. Plows worked around the clock, but many residential streets and sidewalks remained packed with snow as students prepared to return to class.
NYC schools
New York City Public Schools closed Monday for a traditional snow day. Classes resumed in person Tuesday, a move that frustrated some parents, educators and local leaders who said conditions were still unsafe, particularly in harder hit neighborhoods.
Staten Island officials raised concerns that side streets and bus stops had not been fully cleared before students headed back to school.Â
NYPD snowball fight
The mayor is also expected to address a separate incident that drew attention during the storm. Video showed NYPD officers being pelted in the face with snowballs while responding to activity in Manhattan. Police said officers were struck and at least one was evaluated for minor injuries. The department called the behavior unacceptable and said it is investigating.
The incidents added political pressure as the city manages cleanup and recovery efforts.Â
What’s next:
As cleanup continues, attention is turning to how the administration plans to communicate and prepare for the next potential winter storm.
