Southern Tier towns named in Top Friendliest Towns in New York list

STEUBEN COUNTY, N.Y. (WETM) – Two towns in Steuben County have been named to WorldAtlas’s list of the top 11 friendliest towns in New York State.

New York is full of small towns and cities that have their own special thing/place that sets them apart and makes them a worthwhile place to visit. Whether it’s places to eat or festivals that create an eventful atmosphere, these small communities have a lot to offer both residents and passersby.

Out of the 11 towns that were named on the list, two hailed from the Southern Tier in Steuben County: Corning and Hammondsport. Below, you can find details about what exactly makes these towns so special to those who visit them.

Hammondsport

Recognized as a quaint town with a family-friendly atmosphere, Hammondsport is known for its comforting village, which hosts an array of eateries, including the notable Village Tavern Restaurant and the Crooked Lake Ice Cream Company. After a bite to eat, the town welcomes its visitors to a variety of local shops, including gift shops, a clothing store, a furniture store and more. In the summertime, the village square opens its doors to artisans and members of the community for its annual Festival of Crafts.

Among others on the list, Hammondsport is characterized by its location at the south end of Keuka Lake, where it splits into the shape of a Y. The location allows for water-oriented and other outdoor activities, including water sports, boating, hiking, horseback riding, farm visiting and more. Additionally, the town is known for its history involving pioneer and aviator Glenn H. Curtiss, the Finger Lakes Boating Museum and the Finger Lakes wine culture.

Corning

Famously known for its production of glass, Corning boasts its craft with its Museum of Glass, which offers live glassblowing demonstrations, galleries of glass art and a gift shop. In the summertime, it fills the downtown streets with music, vendors and live glassblowing demonstrations at its annual GlassFest.

Along with its glass display, Corning is home to a welcoming array of dining and shopping options for residents and visitors alike. The Rockwell Museum, a Smithsonian Affiliate museum located in Corning’s former city hall building, is situated downtown with an array of American art displays for members of the community to view and enjoy.

In addition to its recognition as a friendly town, Corning has previously been recognized by WorldAtlas as one of the top 11 favorite towns in the northern United States.
