New York trooper struck by vehicle

  • February 24, 2026

DUANE, N.Y. (WCAX) – New York State Police are investigating after a trooper was struck by an out-of-control SUV while investigating a Franklin County accident.

It happened back on the morning of February 13 in the town of Duane. Authorities say Trooper Bailey Martin, who is assigned to the Malone Barracks, was outside her cruiser consulting with another trooper at the intersection of Routes 458 and 30, when the SUV struck her and collided with her cruiser.

The frightening scene was all recorded on Trooper Martin’s body cam, and the footage was released on Tuesday.

The driver, Colin Wanat, 21, of Eastham, Mass., told police he was blinded by the sun and failed to stop at a stop sign, and then lost control turning onto Route 30.

Trooper Martin was taken to Alice Hyde Medical Center for further non-life-threatening injuries and has since returned to duty. Four other passengers in the SUV declined treatment.

There was no immediate word on whether Wanat will face any charges.
