NEW YORK CITY — President Donald Trump took a moment during the State of the Union last night to throw a barb at Mayor Zohran Mamdani over the city’s emergency snow shoveling program after Monday’s blizzard.
“Even the new communist mayor of New York City — I think he’s a nice guy, actually, speaking to him a lot. Bad policy, but nice guy, just said they want people to shovel snow but if you apply for that job you need to show two original forms of ID and a Social Security card,” Trump said.
“Yet they don’t want identification for the greatest privilege of all: Voting in America.”
Mamdani on Wednesday responded to the President’s comments.
The mayor said he appreciated “the focus on the program” adding that the program has been around for years.
“I’d like to say, ‘Thank you,” Mamdani added.
In the aftermath of the blizzard, the city had been offering up to $30 an hour for emergency snow shovelers in an attempt to expedite snow removal citywide.
Trump called also the snow program evidence of “Democratic inconsistency.”
One thousand four hundred people have signed up for the snow removal job program as of Tuesday. More than 16,000 crosswalks, more than 4,000 hydrants, and more than 7,000 bus stops have been cleared of snow.
