WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump gave New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani a shoutout during his State of the Union address, calling him a “nice guy” with bad policy.
“The new communist mayor of New York City, I think he’s a nice guy, actually,” Trump said during the speech.
He also said that he speaks to Mamdani a lot.
“I speak to him a lot,” the president said.
“Bad policy, but nice guy.”
Last month, Mamdani said in an interview that he texts with Trump since they had a meeting in November.
“He gave me his number,” Mamdani said, according to The Hill newspaper. “I’ll say that the conversations between the president and I are private, and I’ll keep them there. But they are always back to the question of New Yorkers.”
Last year, Trump and Mamdani met at the White House, where Trump said it was a great meeting.
We’ve just had a great meeting — a really good, very productive meeting,” Trump said afterwards. “We have one thing in common: we want this city of ours that we love to do very well.”
Mamdani said the meeting was productive.
