More information is being released about the officers involved in a shootout earlier this week with the man accused of killing a 14- and 23-year-old.
The officers from the Brooklyn Center Police Department who fired their weapons were identified Thursday by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) as:
Officer Christian Lausen, who has four years of law enforcement experience.Officer Francisco Martinez, who has three years of law enforcement experience.Officer Wahid Gul, who has five years of law enforcement experience.
The BCA says Brooklyn Center officers were called to a shopping and business area on the 5600 block of Brooklyn Boulevard just before 4 p.m. on Monday on a report that a man was in the parking lot waving a gun.
When officers arrived, they saw the man, later identified as 23-year-old Eddie Duncan, holding a handgun, the BCA said, adding that the officers then approached Duncan, who fired toward them, hitting a police squad car.
The officers fired back at Duncan, striking him, and he ran away before ultimately falling to the ground, according to the BCA.
Duncan was brought to a nearby hospital, where he died. The officers involved were not injured, the BCA said.
A handgun and spent casings were recovered by BCA investigators at the scene. The officer’s body-worn cameras and the squad car camera were on during the shooting and captured portions of it, the BCA said.
The shootout happened after Duncan went to a family member’s home on 42nd and Irving Avenue North in the Camden neighborhood around 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Minneapolis police said. He opened fire inside the home, killing two of his cousins, one of whom was a teen.
The victims were identified on Wednesday as 14-year-old Xavier Vincent Marquis Barnett and 23-year-old Akwame Shaquelle Davron Stewart.
Duncan had bailed out of Hennepin County Jail earlier in the day on Monday after being arrested on Feb. 15 on a warrant for charges of fleeing the police and possessing an illegally modified handgun, Minneapolis police said.
