Hunter College says a professor has been put on leave pending an investigation into comments she made on a Zoom call.

Referring to Black students, Allyson Friedman said, “They’re too dumb to know they’re in a bad school.”

“Apparently Martin Luther King said it: if you train a Black person well enough, they’ll know to use the back. You don’t have to tell them anymore,” Friedman continued.

Friedman made the remarks earlier this month during a community education council meeting about a plan to close or relocate several schools on Manhattan’s West Side.

Nancy Cantor, president of Hunter College, called the remarks “abhorrent” and said counseling is available for any student or staff member who may need it.
