VESTAL, N.Y. (WBNG) — One person was shot in a Vestal home on Wednesday after a shooting involving officers with the Vestal Police Department, according to information from the New York State Police.
Around 11:36 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25, officers were sent to a home on Sequoia Lane in Vestal for reports of a person having a mental health crisis, troopers said.
When officers got to the scene, they found the individual who was mentioned in the call, and found that they had a knife on them, and threatened self-harm, troopers said.
Officers tried several times to have the person drop the knife, but they ignored the commands and threw a TV at police, troopers said.
Despite throwing the TV at the police, officers continued to work to get the person drop the knife and de-escalate the situation. The person made threats toward officers, raised the knife, and walked toward an officer, troopers said. After several attempts to get the person to drop the knife, shots were fired when the person walked toward the officer, and the person was hit, troopers said.
Police immediately gave aid to the person until medical crews arrived, and they were then taken to Wilson Medical Center.
No officers were injured during the incident. In the interest of transparency, the Town of Vestal police Department requested NYSP conduct an independent investigation into the shooting, troopers said.
There is no ongoing threat to the public at this time, and more information will be released as it becomes available, troopers said.
