STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (PIX11) — It’s a burial ground founded a century-and-a-half ago by and for enslaved African Americans.

Some 1,000 children, women and men have been laid to rest at the site on Staten Island. Today, it’s a strip mall.

Some work has been done to commemorate and acknowledge the history and heritage of the cemetery. There are new efforts to find out more details about who is buried there.
