Here’s the quick list:
107: Katie Porcelli, Rocky Point
120: Gabrielle Severin, Bethpage
126: Reese Adams, Calhoun
132: Haley Gonzales, Hicksville
152: Aaliyah Morrow, Bellport
235: Naomi Gonzalez, Valley Stream North
And here’s how each girl reached the final:
Rocky Point’s Katie Porcelli defeated Sydney West of Shenendehowa by 8-6 decision to advance to the 107-pound final. Porcelli led 8-2 before West scored a four-point takedown with 40 seconds left. West nearly secured the pin, but Porcelli fought hard to keep her state title hopes alive. The No. 3 seed will face top-seeded Charlie Wylie of Port Jervis. Wylie is the reigning 107-pound state champion and was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler in last year’s tournament.
The 120-pound final will be must-see TV. Top-seeded Bethpage senior Gabrielle Severin will meet Gigi Sullivan of Monroe-Woodbury for the title. Sullivan, the No. 11 seed, is one of the best wrestlers in the country, but she missed the regular season with an injury before returning for the postseason. Last year, she won the Section IX boys 101-pound title. Severin announced her commitment to Oklahoma State earlier this week.
Calhoun’s Reese Adams has made it all the way back from the torn ACL she suffered last season and will face No. 2 Sara Pauls of Minisink Valley at 126 pounds. Adams, the No. 4 seed, defeated No. 8 Gabriella Franklin of Glens Falls, 10-0, by technical fall in 4:30. Franklin defeated reigning state champion Julianna Hernandez of Newfield in the quarterfinals. Pauls, who won the Eastern States Classic title at 126 was last year’s state runner-up.
Haley Gonzales of Hicksville outlasted Bellport’s Caitlin Maragioglio for a 4-1 decision in the 132-pound semifinals. Top-seeded Gonzales led 2-1 and scored a takedown as time expired to seal the win. Gonzales, who won last year’s 120-pound state title, will face No. 2 Carmen Bishop of Groton in the final.
Bellport’s Aaliyah Morrow has been a technical fall machine. The top-seeded senior locked in a leg lace to defeat No. 4 Gabriella Gonzales of Phoenix, 10-0, by technical fall in 37 seconds to advance to the final. It was her third technical fall of the tournament. She will face No. 6 Ja’Niyah Simmons of Canandaigua, who won a 10-5 decision over Uniondale’s Keishara Tulloch.
Naomi Gonzalez returned the favor. The Valley Stream North senior was pinned by Bay Shore’s Sydney Fisher in the Eastern States Classic final in January. Gonzalez pinned Fisher in 46 seconds to advance to the 235-pound state final. Gonzalez, the No. 2 seed, will face top-seeded and reigning champion Peyton Mullin (Dundee) in the final.Â
