LONG ISLAND (WABC) — Five people have died after shoveling snow on Long Island, officials say.

Three died in Nassau County and two in Suffolk County.

The deaths appear to be caused by heart issues either while shoveling, or after shoveling snow.

“Unlike other snow events where it was a very light snow, as far as, the weight of the snow, this was a very watery and icy snow. So, it weighs a lot more,” said Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman.

A sixth death, a person found in the snow in Deer Park, is still under investigation.

These recent deaths add to six previous snow- and cold-related deaths earlier this year.

Most of those who died were men older than 60 who had medical episodes connected to shoveling snow.

Northwell Health experts say when shoveling snow, pace yourself and take frequent breaks.

“If you’re developing trouble breathing, chest pain, arm jaw, back pain, any of these types of symptoms while you’re shoveling snow, regardless of what your heart rate may be, stop what you’re doing,” said Northwell Health cardiologist Dr. Neil Shah.

Nassau County says support is available for older residents in need of help digging out.

“We have hotlines that are set up, both the county and the town where, if seniors need assistance, we will give assistance to the seniors,” Blakeman said.
