Manhattan Comprehensive Plan
The death of a 13-year old boy Monday afternoon in Manhattan has rekindled the conversation about not allowing trucks to use Route 52 through the downtown area.  Chance Hunnicutt was killed at the intersection of Main and E. North Street when he was hit by a semi tractor trailer.
Manhattan’s comprehensive plan wants to send truck traffic around downtown using a bypass west of the center of town and reconnecting with Route 52 at Hoff Road south of town and past Baker north of town.
Â
Manhattan Mayor Mike Andrieansen tells WJOL he is in favor of the bypass moving forward but it’s not Manhattan’s decision. IDOT would have to approve such a move which he says is potentially years away.

Plainfield had a similar issue but was able to get trucks off Lockport Street/Route 30 moving them to 143rd Street several years ago.
