In a recent statement on Facebook, The City of Manhattan Animal Control announced there has been a recent uptick of raccoons in the area displaying distemper-like symptoms.

Residents in the area are advised to not approach raccoons showing symptoms of distemper and contact Animal Control immediately.

Symptoms may include any of the following abnormal behaviors:

– Lethargy or appearing out of it

– Seizures or twitching

– Disorientation or circling

– Lack of fear of humans

– Stumbling, wobbling, or incoordination

The City of Manhattan Animal Control also would like to remind pet owners to ensure all pets are up to date on vaccines. Distemper is highly contagious among unvaccinated animals.
