1. Officials mark completion of East River Road corridor improvement project
New York state and Monroe County officials on Thursday announced that the East River Road corridor improvement project is complete. With the Rochester Institute of Technology nearby, officials say the goal was to improve the area for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as motorists, from Jefferson Road to the Thruway overpass.
2. Report: Youth tobacco use dropping in N.Y. state
Tobacco use among New York high schoolers is continuing to fall, according to a new report from the state Department of Health. Using data collected from the New York Youth Tobacco Survey, the report shows tobacco use among high school students has dropped to 17%, the lowest since tracking began in 2000. Just over 2% of students reported smoking cigarettes.
3. N.Y. family speaks out on realities of living in poverty
Many New Yorkers know firsthand what effect poverty has on families and children. A state report from 2022 found more than 2.7 million New Yorkers live in poverty. Among that number, more than 735,000 are children.
