Rochester, N.Y. — It’s National Disorders Awareness Week, and the U of R School of Nursing is hosting several events, including the “Voices of Hope” event.

Attendees gather at the Rochester Educational Opportunity Center to learn more about the realities of eating disorders and to provide support for those affected.

“These disorders are life-threatening, they can be chronic, they result in medical hospitalization, and over 40 % of people who are hospitalized,” said Meredith Kells, an assistant professor at the U of R School of Nursing. “And of those who need medical hospitalization, they get re-hospitalized, up to 45% of the time, so this is a public health crisis.”

The event featured a variety of speakers, live music, and even an arts and crafts fair.

The organization will host community-based meal preparation for those in recovery from eating disorders.
