Around NYC

1. U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran draw protests in Manhattan

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Times Square Saturday to protest U.S. and Israeli military strikes against Iran, chanting “Hands off Iran” before marching to Columbus Circle. A smaller group assembled near the United Nations, where the Security Council held an emergency session.

While some Iranian Americans praised the strikes, others warned of another “endless war.”

2. Additional safety protocols added after Columbia student detained by ICE

Columbia University is tightening campus safety protocols after federal agents detained student Ellie Aghayeva inside university housing.

The school alleges agents entered without a judicial warrant, claiming they were searching for a missing child — an accusation the Department of Homeland Security denies. New guidance bars staff from admitting law enforcement into non-public buildings without Public Safety and legal counsel present.

3. Remembering Jamaica Center’s legacy, and the push to preserve its future

The Jamaica Colosseum Mall, long a cultural and commercial anchor on Jamaica Avenue, has closed after decades as a hub for hip-hop style and small businesses.

Artists like 50 Cent, LL Cool J and Ja Rule once filmed and shopped there, shaping Queens’ identity. City leaders say a rezoning plan aims to revive Jamaica Center while protecting longtime residents from displacement.

A new Council-funded task force will focus on preserving the area’s legacy even as development reshapes the neighborhood.
