BOSTON, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) — Governor Maura Healey and Attorney General Andrea Campbell issued a reminder on Monday, saying that ICE agents need a judicial warrant to enter school dorms and other non-public campus facilities, like research labs and staff offices.
This comes after ICE agents reportedly lied about an alleged missing child, so they could enter a Columbia University dormitory. Once inside, those agents detained Ellie Aghayeva.
The Department of Homeland Security said the arrest was tied to a Student Visa, that was terminated in 2016.
She was released later that day after New York City’s Mayor Zohran Mamdani raised her case with President Donald Trump.
Now, she’s suing federal officials, and a hearing has been scheduled for March 6th.
In the meantime, Attorney General Campbell issued a statement, saying in part: “When ICE agents enter private campus housing without a judge-signed warrant, that’s not law enforcement — that’s rogue behavior.”
She went on to add that her office is already in contact with local colleges and universities, to provide guidance and support to protect their communities.
