LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – United South Panthers lost to the Del Rio Rams 1-1 (4-5) penalty shootout on Saturday morning at the Student Activity Complex. South’s loss now sees the Panthers needing some help and three straight wins to snag a post-season spot.
Jazlyn Salazar would find the back of the net in the first half and take a 1-0 lead. South would create several chances to try and tie the match but could not find the tying goal and go into the half-time break down a goal.
In the second half South would earn a penalty kick and from 12-paces Milly Garcia would find the equalizer.
Both teams would try to find the game winning goal but in the game would be won from the penalty spot.
South and Del Rio kicked things off with a goal each. Both teams would trade goals and misses until the sudden death round of the shootout. The Queens would score forcing the Panthers to have to score their attempt but they would miss.
After the game South’s Interim Head Coach Marcos Santos spoke on the challenge that penalty kicks present.
“You know at the time when we tied we had them and we could tell they were desperate and we wanted it more you know losing in pks is a tough loss but more than seeing it as a loss, Santos said .” we see it as a win because we wanted and more and penalties are a 50-50,Santos said.″
Next up the Panthers square off against the top team in 30-6A in the Medina Valley Panthers followed by matchups against Eagle Pass and the Johnson Wolves to close out the regular season.
