The first full week of March is here, and temperatures in the Northland are expected to be mild all week, with a high of nearly 50 degrees currently being forecast for Sunday, March 8.
That also happens to be Daylight Saving, when we all set our clocks ahead an hour and enjoy extra daylight as the first day of spring approaches on Friday, March 20.
That means signs of spring will now start happening throughout Minnesota, like the return of migratory birds like red-winged blackbirds and robins, the flowing of maple sap, and the opening of seasonal businesses.
One popular business in Duluth recently announced that it is getting ready to open its doors very soon, much to the delight of everyone with a sweet tooth.
West Duluth Dairy Queen Opening Day Announced
The fun news arrived on February 28, when West Duluth Dairy Queen owner Chuck Koltes announced on his Facebook page that staff were being trained in preparation for the 2026 opening day, which will happen on Wednesday, March 4.
The announcement was met with a flood of happy reactions and comments from all over the Northland, with many saying they had been waiting for the big news to finally arrive so they could continue their tradition of visiting the popular Dairy Queen location.

The West Duluth Dairy Queen is located at 4431 Grand Avenue.
Now people in Northern Minnesota can eagerly await other signs of spring and summer, like the start of the shipping season, and opening days for Gordy’s Hi-Hat in Cloquet and the Portland Malt Shoppe near Fitger’s in Duluth.
