A Long Island family is speaking up after their daughter allegedly suffered a traumatic experience at a high school dance class, accusing a substitute teacher of sexual assault.
The alleged victim and her mom spoke to reporters on Monday, nearly three weeks after the substitute teacher at Lawrence High School sexually assaulted the 16-year-old at a dance in February.
“I just feel gross, violated and unsafe,” said the high school junior, whose name is being withheld.
The family is planning to file a lawsuit against the district, alleging the school to nothing to protect their daughter.
“My daughter was the one who initially notified me that she had been violated at school. The school did not contact me,” said mother Regina Hicks.
In the lawsuit, Hicks state that school officials were negligent in responding to what allegedly happened. The mother said it was her, not school officials, who called Nassau County police.
It was only then that 58-year-old substitute teacher Constantine Theodosiou was arrested.
“They failed her. They didn’t protect her. Even after she stated what transpired, they sent her right back to class,” said Hicks.
Along with her lawyer, Hicks has begun the process of suing the Lawrence School District for $5 million, claiming school officials tried to cover up the allegations.
“They gave her the run-around, they said ‘keep it down, keep it quiet. We’ll see, we’ll figure it out. We’ll get to you when we get to you,'” said the family’s attorney, Vess Mitev.
The school district refused to comment on any pending lawsuit, but said in a statement that the substitute teacher “was removed from his position and has been banned from the Lawrence School District since the day of his arrest.”
Hicks said Monday was the first day her daughter went back to school since the alleged incident.
“She hasn’t wanted to go to school. She’s afraid,” the mother said.
Theodosiou pleaded not guilty to sex abuse and other charges. His lawyer told NBC New York that “the allegation made against this well-respected teacher is both opportunistic and meritless.”
