Around NYC

1. Supreme Court preserves only GOP-held congressional district in New York City for 2026 elections

The Supreme Court on Monday sided with Republicans in ruling that the boundaries of the only GOP-held congressional district in New York City do not not need to be redrawn for the 2026 elections, despite a court ruling that the district is unfair to Black and Hispanic residents.

Over the dissent of the court’s three liberal justices, the conservative majority halted the state court ruling that had ordered New York’s redistricting commission to redraw the district held by Rep. Nicole Malliotakis that covers Staten Island and a small piece of Brooklyn.

2. As Cross Bronx bridge project looms, residents concerned about health and quality of life

The Cross Bronx Expressway — which carries about 150,000 vehicles daily — is set for bridge repairs that would add road shoulders and widen parts of the corridor.

The state Department of Transportation says the project will improve safety and response times. But residents of the Bronx River Houses worry the changes could shrink the buffer between homes and highway traffic, worsening air pollution.

3. New York leaders react to Iran bombings

Gov. Kathy Hochul said New York is in a “high state of alert” following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, citing concerns about possible retaliation. She and Mayor Zohran Mamdani ordered heightened security at houses of worship and diplomatic sites.

Meanwhile, Rep. Nicole Malliotakis backed the Trump administration’s actions, while Democratic Reps. Gregory Meeks and Dan Goldman urged caution and pushed for a war powers vote, warning against another prolonged overseas conflict.
