New federal work requirements for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients took effect Sunday, potentially impacting thousands of New Yorkers.

Under the new rules, adults ages 18 to 64 must work or participate in an approved job training program for at least 80 hours a month to receive full SNAP benefits. People with disabilities and those caring for a child under 14 are exempt. Those who do not meet the requirements will be limited to three months of benefits within a three-year period.

The law also eliminates several previous automatic exemptions, including for adults over 54, people experiencing homelessness, military veterans and young adults who aged out of foster care.

Kanchana Suggu of the United Way of New York City joined “Weekends On 1” to discuss what the new rules could mean for vulnerable residents.
