An iconic toy store is opening new locations, nearly a decade after the brand nearly disappeared in bankruptcy.

Toys “R” Us announced it will open at least 30 stores in the U.S. for the upcoming holiday shopping season. Eight will be permanent flagship locations, including one in New York state, and more than 20 others will be temporary seasonal shops that will close sometime after Christmas.

According to USA Today, one of the new permanent locations will be at Tanger Outlets Deer Park, located at 152 The Arches Circuit in Deer Park, N.Y. It will be the first standalone Toys “R” Us store on Long Island since 2018, Newsday reported; an opening date has not been announced.

Toys “R” Us will also open one temporary location in Upstate New York at the Walden Galleria in Buffalo. The mall has not specified when the pop-up shop will open, but seasonal locations began opening in other states last week.

“This next phase of growth brings the magic of Toys ‘R’ Us to even more communities across the country — just in time for the holidays — and delivers the joyful shopping experience that has made us a trusted destination for generations,” said Jamie Uitdenhowen, executive vice president of Toys “R” Us at its parent company, WHP Global.

Toys “R” Us, known as the place “where a kid can be a kid,” closed all of its locations by 2021 after liquidating its assets from bankruptcy in 2017. The chain started making a comeback in 2022 with smaller pop-up shops inside Macy’s department stores, including at Destiny USA in Syracuse, the Eastview Mall and Greece Ridge Center near Rochester; Colonie Center near Albany; and the Poughkeepsie Galleria in the Hudson Valley.
