As New York Jets fandom awaits the Breece Hall decision with bated breath, a bit of good news hit the wire.
Per Over the Cap, the Jets’ compensatory pick situation suddenly improved for the 2026 NFL draft. What was originally projected as four total comp picks, with a pair of fifth-round selections leading the way, has turned into a fourth and a fifth.
The selection that morphed from a fifth into a fourth-rounder comes courtesy of cornerback D.J. Reed.
Comp picks summary
Comp picks are dished out to teams that lose free agents in the prior offseason. That is, of course, when Reed signed a free-agent deal with the Detroit Lions.
The calculation determining which round a comp pick lands is technically unknown — kept private. In short, it’s a formula that includes salary, playing time, awards, etc., which ultimately determines the placement (anywhere between Round 3-7).
The Jets’ entire list of comp selections for this April’s draft is as follows:
Round 4: D.J. Reed (DET)
Round 5: Morgan Moses (NE)
Round 7: Solomon Thomas (DAL)
Round 7: Tyler Conklin (LAC)
These four players are familiar to Jets fans. We already discussed Reed, but losing Morgan Moses to the New England Patriots fetched New York a fifth-round pick.
Solomon Thomas signing on with the Dallas Cowboys and Tyler Conklin doing the same with the Los Angeles Chargers represent the two seventh-round comp picks.
The lost players who didn’t fetch compensation are Javon Kinlaw, Haason Reddick, Ashtyn David, and Brandin Echols. The reason for that was the signed free agents who effectively “canceled” out those losses — Justin Fields, Brandon Stephens, Andre Cisco, and Josh Myers.
32 pick limit; full slate
However, the two seventh-rounders will most likely not be in play. An exact number of 32 compensatory picks is awarded, which means any selection after 32 is discarded.
As of now, the Jets’ two sevenths are beyond the 32-pick limit, meaning the team has just two comp picks.
When factored into the entire scope of the draft, the New York Jets currently hold double-digit selections:
Round 1
Round 1
Round 2
Round 2
Round 4
Round 4 (Comp)
Round 5 (Comp)
Round 6
Round 7
Round 7
Round 7 (Comp discarded — beyond 32 pick limit)
Round 7 (Comp discarded — beyond 32 pick limit)
The 2026 NFL draft is scheduled to open on Thursday, April 23, at 8:00 p.m. ET. The New York Jets hold the No. 2 overall pick, for which Ohio State defender Arvell Reese remains the favorite.
