The New York State Police on Friday arrested the former president of the New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association on a felony grand larceny charge for allegedly stealing money from the union for himself.

Thomas Mungeer, a 56-year-old retired state trooper, was arrested at State Police Troop G Headquarters in Latham, and arraigned on a third-degree grand larceny felony charge in Albany City Court, State Police said Friday morning in a statement.

A lengthy investigation revealed Mungeer misappropriated union funds for personal use and expenses between March 5, 2018, and Oct. 4, 2022, while serving as president of the NYSTPBA, the labor union that represents thousands of active and retired state troopers, according to State Police.

As PBA president, Mungeer served as a public face for the organization, often appearing in the media to discuss issues, such as trooper shortages, body cameras and more.

Following his arraignment, Mungeer was released pending his next court appearance on Dec. 1 in Albany County Superior Court, police said.

The Albany County District Attorney’s Office assisted in the police investigation.
