STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — District Attorney Michael E. McMahon is partnering with the NYPD for a “No Questions Asked Cash for Guns” event on Saturday in Stapleton.
Attendees will be able to hand in their firearms without fear of being questioned at Christ Assembly Lutheran Church.
Anyone who turns in a working handgun or assault rifle will receive a $500 bank card. A ghost gun or firearm made with a 3D printer could be worth $200 and an operable rifle or shotgun might fetch $75. An airgun, imitation gun or nonworking firearm could be worth $25.
Compensation is available for up to three surrendered weapons.
“While there is no silver bullet to eradicating gun violence, we know that the presence of even one firearm in the home can be the difference between a fatal accident, a successful suicide attempt, or a domestic violence incident escalating out of control,” McMahon said, explaining why the buyback events are held.
Since McMahon became district attorney in 2016, gun buy-back events have helped remove nearly 1,000 firearms from the streets of Staten Island.
“While our office works tirelessly in tandem with our partners in the NYPD to arrest and prosecute those who carry illegal firearms, prevention is absolutely critical to public safety,” McMahon said.
Event hours are 10 a.m to 4 p.m. at the church at 27 Hudson St., side entrance.
