LOWER MANHATTAN (PIX11) — A 16-year-old student was apprehended with a loaded handgun at Cascades High School in Lower Manhattan on Tuesday morning, according to police.

The school at 198 Forsyth St. was given an anonymous tip about a student with a firearm, sources told PIX11. That’s when the building was placed on lockdown and school safety agents challenged the student, according to the source.

Safety agents physically restrained the student and removed a 9mm handgun with 10 bullets in the chamber from his waistband, sources say.

“Weapons have absolutely no place in our schools, or our city. This incident is deeply concerning,” said a spokesperson for New York City Public Schools in a statement. “The school acted decisively and with the help of NYPD this weapon was quickly recovered; all students and staff were safe. We are offering additional security and support to the school community in the coming days.”
