Just a few years after welcoming a Whole Foods to the neighborhood following years of speculation, Downtown Jersey City is slated to get a Trader Joe’s as well, inside a development slated to wrap construction later this year.

Last year, the Historic Downtown Special Improvement District posted on Instagram about the possible arrival of Trader Joe’s. “Rumor has it that Trader Joe’s is in the final stages of signing a lease right here in Downtown Jersey City,” read the post, adding that the plan is to open the location in 2026.

Per our reporting from last October, there were hints that the grocer could be coming to 55 Hudson Street. The developers behind the 58-story tower applied for a deviation from the maximum number of off-street retail parking spaces provided in 2024, which increased the number of retail parking spaces from 31 to 62 while reducing parking for the building’s residential component.

Per the Jersey City Times, Trader Joe’s is now officially the tenant coming to the space. While an opening date for the grocer has not been disclosed, it’s estimated by the outlet that 2027 is when the Jersey City spin on Trader Joe’s will be launched.

The outpost will be the second Trader Joe’s location in Hudson County, following a Hoboken store that opened in 2016. The new shop will be situated near the Exchange Place PATH and Light Rail stations, just two blocks from the Hudson River.
