Distant Unveils “Spirit” Music Video

“Spirit” is one of Distant’s most personal releases to date. The band elaborates:
“Inspired by a real life stabbing of a family member at a clinic called Spirit, the track channels grief, shock, and the uncomfortable human surge of rage and revenge that follows trauma. It is raw emotion turned into relentless sound and not supposed to glorify violence, but it is meant to confront it and ultimately deal with its traumatising aftermath.”

The song and video both feature vocals from Tyler Beam of deathcore heavyweights The Last Ten Seconds Of Life. Watch the video below. More…

Anthea Debuts New Lyric Video

Los Angeles symphonic metal band Anthea has unveiled “Awakening (Song For Spring),” the second single from their upcoming third studio album, “Beyond The Dawn.” In contrast to the shadowed theatrical tension of “Phantom In The Masquerade,” this new release opens a different chapter, measured, luminous, and deliberately forward-facing.

Rather than relying on spectacle, “Awakening (Song For Spring)” builds its impact through control and clarity. The arrangement unfolds gradually, allowing melody and atmosphere to take precedence over sheer force. Guitar lines remain precise and defined, the rhythmic foundation steady and purposeful, while layered orchestral textures expand the harmonic frame without excess. The result is a composition that breathes, structured, intentional, and dynamically balanced.

Lyrically, the song draws from the symbolism of seasonal change. Spring becomes more than scenery; it serves as a metaphor for re-calibration and the regaining of momentum. The imagery of thawing ground, open skies, and returning life mirrors an internal shift, leaving stagnation behind and stepping into renewed direction. It is not naïve optimism but earned progression. More…

Headline News

Justin Broadrick Announces The End Of Godflesh

Justin K. Broadrick, the vocalist and guitarist of industrial metal pioneers Godflesh, has announced that the band will no longer perform live. This follows a recent major surgery, which has left the musician feeling that he can no longer perform the vocal style Godflesh requires. He also confirmed that a new album, “Decay,” will be released later this year, with another to follow, though there will still be remix and live albums. On his Instagram account, Broadrick wrote the following:

“I’ve dreaded sharing this news, partly due to the threat of insensitive and/or negative comments, combined simply with the general anxiety of it all, I am also exhausted, but I’ve left comments on.

“So, 3 weeks ago I had significant open abdominal surgery for a inguinal hernia that was close to an emergency. I am still in shock from the process, and as someone with diagnosed Autism and C-PTSD, open surgery is absolutely debilitating, not that it is easier for anyone of course.

“I had a huge hernia, and for it to be repaired, I had to endure a 6 inch incision in my groin. This unfortunately was not keyhole surgery. I have a very weak abdominal wall, which at being 57 yrs old this year, is not going to improve.

“If I continue to perform and shout/scream as I do with Godflesh, then I am at high risk for more hernias, and blowing out my abdominal wall entirely.

“Godflesh live ended the day of my surgery, and upon the surgeon making this statement. I am now just about walking freely, but with little pace, albeit extremely carefully. The full healing process is approximately 6 months.

“Fortunately, my other projects do not require screaming/shouting nor a physically demanding performance; jesu and JK FLESH shows remain.

“I have been mixing, what will be the penultimate Godflesh album – ‘Decay’, for release on Relapse in hopefully July/Aug, mixes are being completed imminently. The album is basically done. I’ve had the final Godflesh studio album written, for almost a year and half now, that will be recorded and completed late 2026. After that there will continue to be Godflesh dub albums, live albums, and so on, but no new studio releases nor performances.

“In the near future, a new solo project will emerge, further exploring the parameters of heavy/ugly music, featuring my guitars and electronics, and of course vocals, but NOT shouted vocals!

“Regarding Godflesh in Athens, Gr, please contact the promotion for details, etc. There will be an official announcement via my agency/management regarding this ASAP.

“Thank you for your understanding.

“Take care out there.
Justin” More…

Yoth Iria Announces New Album

“This time we entered the studio with the clear intention of creating a landmark album for the band.” It’s a noble and challenging mission statement from Hellenic black metal troop Yoth Iria, and one that has amply succeeded in the form of “Gone With The Devil,” the Attica quartet’s stellar third album, set for worldwide release May 8th on Metal Blade Records.

Yoth Iria’s trajectory has been on a steep ascent since crafty 2021 debut “As The Flame Withers” and 2024’s hypnotic “Blazing Inferno,” but there has audibly been a concerted determination to develop and expand in sinister new directions. “The creative workflow was similar to ‘Blazing Inferno,’ yet we deliberately pushed ourselves to bring new elements into our music. We kept the immediacy of ‘Blazing Inferno,’ the psychedelia of ‘As The Flame Withers,’ and all the characteristics people expect from Hellenic black metal, while adding fresh sounds and atmospheres never before heard from Yoth Iria.”

The daemonic avatar Yoth Iria was first explicitly summoned on Rotting Christ’s legendary debut “Thy Mighty Contract” in 1993. Bassist/lyricist Jim Mutilator formed that band as Black Church in 1984, before also becoming a founder member of cult Athenian BM heroes Varathron for their first five years. Renewing the otherworldly atmospheres and occult ravishment for a new era, Yoth Iria functions almost as the third panel in an apocalyptic triptych of Hellenic black metal excellence. More…

Port Noir Shares “Ebb And Flow” Music Video

After announcing their 5th album “The Dark We Keep” in January, the Swedish prog band Port Noir continue with “Ebb And Flow,” another single ahead of the record’s release. The single offers a modern alt-metal track exploring disconnection, decay, and the struggle to stay awake in a world on autopilot. “Ebb And Flow” speaks to fans of dark, atmospheric rock with progressive edges.

“Ebb And Flow” is the fourth single the band has released from their upcoming record and follows on “Complicated,” “Redshift,” and “Noir.” “The Dark We Keep” will be the 5th full length album by Port Noir, to be released May 15th, 2026, via InsideOutMusic.

The band comments on the new single:

“Sometimes we don’t write songs to arrive somewhere. We write them to move. Instead of verses and choruses, we let ideas drift, repeat, and change shape. The movement is the destination. This is a formula we explored and utilized on our earlier albums and something we wanted to tap back into while writing ‘Ebb And Flow.’

“Lyrically it portrays a world caught in endless cycles of numb repetition, where we slowly lose awareness, identity, and agency without resisting. There’s no collapse or climax, only quiet erosion. The Ebb and Flow keeps everything moving just enough to feel alive, while actually preventing change.” More…

Trelldom To Release New Album In May

Iconic Norwegian act Trelldom, founded by legendary vocalist Gaahl, reveal the bleak music video “By the Word” as the first advance single taken from their forthcoming new full-length: “…By The Word….”

“…By The Word…” has been scheduled for release on May 29, 2026. The album can be pre-ordered here.

Tracklist:
1. When This Was Young

Witch Ripper Shares New Song “The Clock Queen”

Witch Ripper enters epic storytelling mode with a track that’s got it all: “The Clock Queen” is groovy, heavy and proggy, and serves as the next advance single from their forthcoming third album “Through the Hourglass,” which is scheduled for release on April 10, 2026.

“‘The Clock Queen’ is the best representation of Witch Ripper in its purest form: Heavy. Melodic. Progressive,” vocalist and guitarist Curtis Parker writes. “In our story, it represents the big reveal of who our antagonist meets in this world they’ve found themselves in. Throughout the album, we peppered in what we call “the clock queen’s theme,” a melody that sneaks its way into almost every song at some point. This song is the culmination of that tension and it’s when we finally meet the driving force of the album: The Clock Queen herself.” More…

Sebastian Bach To Front Twisted Sister This Fall

Following the resignation of frontman Dee Snider and uncertainty over the band’s future, Twisted Sister has announced that solo artist and former Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach has been recruited to sing for them at their scheduled Fall shows. A message from the band reads as follows:

“Twisted Sister members Jay Jay French and Eddie Ojeda are thrilled to announce that iconic vocalist and front man Sebastian Bach will be fronting the band for a handful of select dates this fall. These appearances do not affect or conflict with Sebastian’s current or future solo touring schedule, which remains fully intact.”

Twisted Sister are celebrating their fiftieth anniversary this year, but plans hit a snag when Dee Snider was forced to step away due to health issues, causing the band to cancel their Summer tour dates.

Unverkalt Shares New Song Featuring Sakis Tolis

After drawing closer and closer to the edge over the past decade, Unverkalt are plunging into the darkness that’s always awaited below. The post-metal luminaries are still possessed by a cinematic vision, but their new album and first for Season of Mist throws back the velvet curtain in favor of a blackened veil. While wrestling with the weight of our accursed histories, “Héréditaire” now stands as their heaviest and most heartfelt offering.

Today, Unverkalt are thrilled to release a new video for the song that serves as the emotional pillar of Héréditaire. Fueled by contempt for those content on watching the world burn, “I, The Deceit” radiates strength with support from the band’s Greek brother-in-arms Sakis Tolis of Rotting Christ.

“I enjoy discovering new, unique and compelling music in today’s overwhelming world of information, and I believe I truly succeeded with Unverkalt,” Sakis Tolis says. “This is an exceptional piece of art, worth every minute of listening.”

“‘I, The Deceit’ captures the stillness of those who let the world burn, not out of ignorance, but because it serves them,” Unverkalt vocalist Dimitra Kalavrezou says. More…

Skindred Releases “Can I Get A” Music Video

Welsh ragga metal legends Skindred have released their brand-new single “Can I Get A,” which receives its radio world-premiere on Craig Charles’ show on BBC 6 Music this afternoon.

With a jaunty electro-honky-tonk intro leading straight into a infectiously singalong pop chorus, complete with “woop-woops”, “Can I Get A” is an inspiring song of resilience and defiance, with playful sonic nods to the ‘80s, including a Phil Collins-style drum break and a soaring gospel backing vocal.

However dig deep into the lyrics of “Can I Get A” and you’ll uncover a mini autobiography in song, addressing issues of childhood poverty and family hardship, made bearable through the love and support of those closest to you. It takes lead singer Benji Webbe back to being orphaned as a child, and how he was raised by his older brother who was little more than a kid himself.

“It’s me as a child seeing my friends with all these amazing things that people take for granted that I never had,” he explains. “I was eleven years old and was worried what my life would become. A lot of kids where I lived got into trouble and ended up in prison. I was just gonna grab that microphone and see where it would take me. I want to empower people to know that you can be what you want to be. Don’t spend your life worrying about what you haven’t got. Live your life because now is the time.”

The track is accompanied by a brilliant, tongue-in-cheek video, featuring the band performing alongside male and female dancers inside whirling graphics. Watch the video below. More…

70k Tons of Metal 2026: A Survivor’s Account

This year’s 70,000 Tons of Metal was definitely one for the record books to its loyal faithful, aka “survivors”. For the first timers, it was definitely an experience they won’t soon forget.

For those that are new to Metalunderground.com, or by chance stumbled upon this article haphazardly, this incredible music festival takes place every year in February on a full-size passenger cruise ship with 60 bands representing just about every genre in the heavy metal universe.

Survivors

The constant vibe among “survivors” onboard 70k of Metal!

The festival takes place over five days and the ship has always sailed to a sun-drenched location in the Caribbean such as Mexico, The Bahamas, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. This year’s port was Nassau, Bahamas. This is the 14th rendition of the festival and besides a few obscure incidents, this festival has gone off with nary a hiccup…until now.

Let me preface this by stating that it is 100% fact that 70,000 Tons of Metal cannot control the weather. Andy Piller, the founder and skipper of the festival, is not Zeus. Now that we are clear on this, if you ask the “survivors” what they remember most from this year’s festival, I’m betting most of them will say, it was cold and it was windy.

Even though the weather did indeed suck, the one thing that I can say coming from someone that is a 7 time “survivor,” is that this was the most memorable and the most thrilling time that I’ve ever experienced during all of my 70k of Metal experiences. I loved spending time in Nassau, I loved the bands that played this year and most importantly, I loved that all of us “survivors” were having a blast and soaking up (literally) this year’s wild ride!

Without further ado, I’ll summarize this year’s edition of 70,000 Tons of Metal as best as I am able to.

What stood out most at this year’s festival were the bands that performed. Anthrax was the biggest name on the roster and they just killed it at both of their sets. Their second set on the Pool Stage saw Joey Vera from Armored Saint taking over bass duties from Frank Bello while Frank was accepting a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance honoring the late Prince of Darkness, Ozzy Osbourne. I have to hand it to Joey Vera though, he was a natural fit with one of thrash metal’s Big Four giants.

Another band I really enjoyed was Kanonenfieber, a German blackened death metal band that garb up in German World War I costumes. It was my first time seeing them live and I was wowed by their stage performance, it definitely had a theatrical feel to it.

Kanonenfieber

Some of my other favorite sets were from Heathen, Satan, Wolf, Groza, Trash Panda, Vader, Hirax and the much-anticipated reformation and return of the Dutch death metal legends, Izegrim.
