1. Mother continues to fight for son’s release from ICE

Through tears, Raiza Contreras told of the pain she’s been living through as her son remains in U.S. Immigration and Customs detention.

It’s been nearly 10 months since she last saw her son, Dylan Contreras. The now 21-year-old was detained back in May at 26 Federal Plaza, becoming the first public school student from the Bronx to be held by ICE.

2. Hochul lobbies rolling back N.Y. climate law, cites high costs

After years of defending the state’s landmark climate change law that was passed in 2019, Gov. Kathy Hochul is now making the case to roll it back — arguing the fast-approaching deadlines aimed at curbing emissions could be too costly for New Yorkers.

Hochul says the benefits of the state’s climate laws don’t outweigh the cost — at least not right now — citing new price estimates released by the state’s entity conducting energy research, NYSERDA, which found New Yorkers and businesses will face “high costs” if the current law isn’t changed.

3. Upper West Side school to remain open after hot mic incident

The city’s Department of Education is reversing course and no longer moving forward with a proposal to close a middle school on the Upper West Side.

Parents say they believe the reason is because of an alleged racist comment made by a parent during a community education council meeting.

NY1 spoke with Janette Waugh, the mother of the 8th-grader who was speaking at the meeting.
