STATEWIDE — WHILE THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION has, for now, ended the IRS’s Direct File program — which allowed taxpayers to file their taxes online for free — free tax return filing is still available for qualified taxpayers in New York State, the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance said Thursday. The state’s Free File software can be used for filing both federal and state income tax returns.
In addition, qualified taxpayers may qualify for free in-person or virtual assistance filling out their tax forms, through the Taxpayer Assistance Program. The deadline to file returns and pay any tax owed (or request an extension of time) is midnight on April 15, 2026.
