The New York government announced a major advancement in rail travel between New York City and Albany. In the spring of 2026, Metro-North Railroad will offer new direct services from Albany to Grand Central Terminal, which will also serve the New York State capital for the first time in decades. Simultaneously, Amtrak will restore some suspended services, implement a price cap, and make travel more affordable for passengers on the Hudson River corridor.

These advancements come on the heels of several months of service disruptions and decreased Amtrak service due to the ongoing repair of the East River Tunnel project. The anticipated changes are likely to close service gaps and provide passengers with more travel options, thus improving the region’s transport.
Metro-North’s Historic Expansion to Albany

For the first time, Metro-North will extend its Hudson Line beyond Poughkeepsie, connecting New York City directly with Albany. A daily round trip will be introduced in early 2026, with test trains running later this year. This expansion will fill the gaps left by Amtrak’s temporary suspension of services and provide a new, reliable transit option for commuters and visitors along the scenic Hudson Valley.

The expansion of Metro-North to Albany also brings the symbolic return of passenger service to a route once operated by the New York Central Railroad. This service last ran between Grand Central and Albany in 1967, making this new initiative a significant milestone in the region’s rail history.

The extension of Metro-North service aims to provide a more affordable and accessible alternative to Amtrak, with the state and local governments working together to ensure that travelers have multiple options for reaching Albany and other parts of the Hudson Valley. The government stated that the new service would “provide more travel choices and lower fares for millions of riders,” improving the overall quality and reliability of transportation in the region.

Metro-North President Justin Vonashek highlighted that the expansion would “close a critical gap in regional transit,” restoring capacity and connecting New York City and Hudson Valley communities with the high-quality service the railroad is known for.

Amtrak Restores Service and Caps Fares

In addition to the Metro-North expansion, Amtrak will resume one daily round trip between Albany–Rensselaer and Penn Station starting on 1 December 2025. This move restores the trains that were previously suspended due to the East River Tunnel repair project. Specifically, Amtrak will reinstate trains 235 and 238, which were canceled earlier this year, providing much-needed capacity to the Albany–New York City route.

Amtrak is also introducing a fare cap for Empire Service tickets, setting a maximum price of 99 USD for coach fares between Albany and New York. This initiative is designed to help make rail travel more affordable for residents and visitors alike, particularly in light of recent service disruptions caused by infrastructure improvements.

Amtrak President Roger Harris noted that the restoration of service and the introduction of the price cap were direct responses to the high demand for train service between Albany and New York City. The restored routes will also improve connectivity, as Amtrak reintroduces direct service between Albany and Boston on the Lake Shore Limited, replacing a temporary bus connection that had been in place since the spring.

These changes are expected to have a positive impact on the region’s economy, making it easier for commuters, students, and tourists to travel between Albany, New York City, and other key destinations in the region. The restoration of service and the fare caps align with the state’s commitment to enhancing rail infrastructure and improving transportation options for all residents.

New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie-Therese Dominguez emphasized the importance of the Empire Service, which is supported by the state, calling it one of the “most highly-utilized and important passenger rail services in the nation.” She also praised the government’s leadership in working to make rail service more reliable and affordable, particularly during the ongoing infrastructure challenges posed by the East River Tunnel project.

Looking Ahead: A Stronger Rail Future for New York

Considered the latest expansion of the Metro-North Services facilities, the track between Albany and New York City becomes even better connected with the restoration of various Amtrak routes. Together, these modifications are expected to improve corridor ridership, and thus, enhance travel opportunities and accessibility.
