1. N.Y. Attorney General Letitia James pleads not guilty in mortgage fraud case pushed by Trump
James’ first court appearance in Virginia sets the stage for a high-stakes legal battle between the Republican administration and a Democratic longtime Trump adversary who angered him with a major civil fraud case she brought against him.
2. Police: Man accused of stealing 47 rental cars worth $1M from Syracuse Airport
A man is accused of stealing dozens of rental vehicles from a Syracuse airport car rental agency and renting them out himself. Between June and August, 47 vehicles were stolen from Avis Budget Car Rental at the Syracuse Hancock International Airport campus. The vehicles were valued at more than $1 million.
3. Sheriff’s office: More victims linked to convicted sex offender
Officials said Friday morning that Ryan Pontello, accused of raping a 5-year-old girl in June in North Syracuse and accused later that month of additional sexual assaults of children, faces more than a dozen more felony charges, linked to alleged sex acts on children in 2022.
4. New York allocates funds for Planned Parenthood in the wake of federal cuts
This comes months after the federal government enacted a one-year prohibition on Medicaid funding to organizations that provide abortion. The prohibition specifically applies to groups that received more than $800,000 in federal funds back in 2023. Planned Parenthood and its affiliates are the only organizations in the state that meet the requirements for the funding prohibitions.
5. Retired New York state trooper charged with stealing from State Police union
Thomas Mungeer, a 56-year-old retired state trooper, was arrested at State Police Troop G Headquarters in Latham, and arraigned on a third-degree grand larceny felony charge in Albany City Court, State Police said Friday morning in a statement.
