The upstart Buffalo Sabres have acquired forward Sam Carrick from the New York Rangers ahead of Friday’s trade deadline.
New York is receiving a third- and sixth-round draft pick in the 2026 NHL Draft from Buffalo.
Carrick, 34, has scored four goals and six assists over 60 games with the Rangers in 2025-26, his 10th season in the NHL.
The native of Markham, Ont., is in the second year of a three-year, $3 million contract, featuring an average annual value of $1 million.
Buffalo picked up a 5-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday to improve their record to 37-19-6 on the season, tying them with the Tampa Bay Lightning for first place in the Atlantic Division.
The Sabres haven’t made the playoffs since the 2010-11 season, the longest drought in the NHL.
Selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the fifth round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Carrick has tallied 38 goals and 45 assists over 380 career games with the Leafs, Anaheim Ducks, Edmonton Oilers and Rangers. He has one assists over 10 playoff games.
