A Morrisania man is dead after police say he was shot inside his apartment early Friday morning in the Forest Houses.

The NYPD says officers responded to a 911 call shortly after 6:30 a.m. at 765 East 165th St., where they found 27-year-old Jayvontae Simmons unconscious with a gunshot wound to the head.

First responders rushed Simmons to Lincoln Hospital, where he later died from his injuries, according to police.

The shooting triggered a large police presence at the NYCHA building throughout the day as detectives searched for evidence. Residents told News 12 the building was effectively placed on lockdown, with people needing police clearance to enter or leave while investigators worked inside.

“It’s like the new life— the new world,” one neighbor said.

Residents were shaken by the loss, describing Simmons as a respectful and helpful member of the community.

“I was stuck,” a woman told News 12. “I don’t know what type of past he had but he was very nice, very respectful, very helpful.”

Investigators were seen removing evidence from the building in brown paper bags as they continued to piece together what happened.

Police say the investigation remains active. As of Friday evening, the NYPD says there is no description of a suspect and it is unclear who the gunman may be.
