The NHL trade deadline has officially passed. After a couple of weeks, it appears that the Vincent Trocheck trade saga has come to an end, with the New York Rangers ultimately deciding to hold onto their star forward.

The team’s thought to be in on Trocheck included the Minnesota Wild, Detroit Red Wings, and Carolina Hurricanes. Trocheck would have benefited all three of those NHL organizations ahead of their respective NHL playoff pushes. It’s unclear if any of those teams were able to put together a strong enough trade package or if the Rangers just never really made him available, despite all the rumors and reports.

The veteran winger Vincent Trocheck remains a core piece of this Rangers team, even though it’s been an underwhelming season in New York. While trade talks generated some speculation across the NHL, the decision to hold onto Trocheck means that any potential deal could now be pushed to the summer.

This gives the Rangers more time to weigh offers and allows interested teams to reassess their rosters before entering negotiations.

Trocheck, if traded, would have been one of the biggest stars moved ahead of the deadline, but instead, he stays put in New York. Over 46 games this season, Trocheck has 39 points (12 goals and 27 assists), and a +/- of -15. That ugly -15 is likely due to the Rangers’ inability to score. He’s been a consistent 60-70 point player over his NHL career, which is enough reason for the Rangers to hold onto him.

What’s Next for Vincent Trocheck?

The reports directly following the 3 p.m. trade deadline were that the Rangers didn’t want to “make a trade just to make a trade.”

As for what’s next for Trocheck? His market could pick up again this summer, but it’d be hard to imagine he ultimately gets traded if he didn’t at the deadline.

However, the Rangers did trade away Sam Carrick to the Buffalo Sabres for a third and sixth-round draft pick, but that was the only move made.

Rangers’ GM Chris Drury indicated that the team is in a “retool” process, and their position in the standing would indicate that. New York is dead last in the Metro Division.

Maybe trading away Trocheck would help in the long haul for the Rangers, but it also would give another team in the NHL a chance (like the Hurricanes, Red Wings) a better chance to win the Stanley Cup.
