The NYPD is reporting record lows citywide for shootings and murders, but the Bronx is seeing a different trend.
Crime in the borough is up during the first two months of the year compared with the same time last year.
The Bronx recorded the city’s first homicide of the year and now accounts for half of all homicides across New York City.
On Wednesday, a 19-year-old man was shot and killed near a daycare on East 183rd Street in the Belmont section of the borough. Surveillance video shows the moments leading up to the shooting.
The latest city crime statistics run through March 1 and do not include that incident. So far this year, the Bronx has recorded 16 of the city’s 32 murders.
In the past month alone, several lives have been lost to gun violence on the borough’s streets. Neighbors who live near the scene of the latest shooting say they are increasingly concerned about their safety.
Neighbors say they hope the recent violence serves as a wake-up call and leads to more resources and police presence, so the next two months do not repeat the same trend.
