New York State Attorney General’s Office investigating death of Binghamton man while in police custody

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WBNG) — The New York State Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigations is investigating a death of a Binghamton man after he suffered a medical emergency while in the custody of the Binghamton Police Department.

According to the Binghamton Police Department, on Saturday March 7, officers made contact with a 37-year-old man in the area of West State St. and Chenango St.

Officers say that the man was in the road intentionally blocking an occupied Broome County Transit bus.

The man then climbed onto the front of the bus, then showed erratic behaviors towards the riders and then the officers.

Police were able to deescalate the situation, and took the male into custody after resisting arrest.

The man was then taken to Binghamton General Hospital for a health evaluation where he stayed overnight and was then discharge on Sunday, March 8.

An officer was also taken to the hospital for a knee injury during the incident and was later released.

After the suspect’s release from the hospital, he was taken to Binghamton Police Headquarters by police,

While in the parking area, police say the man began experiencing an emergency medical episode.

Officers called for EMS, and in the meantime, performed first aid treatment on the man which included chest compressions and administering Narcan.

Once EMS arrived on scene, they treated and transported the man to UHS Wilson Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

The identity of the man has not been released pending the notification of next of kin.

Per New York State Law, the matter of the death investigation is being conducted by the NYS Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigations.

Per Binghamton Police Department policy, all officers that were involved in the case are to be put on modified duty status during the investigation.
