RIVERDALE, NY – The Manhattan Jaspers Women’s Volleyball team (2-18, 0-10 MAAC) fell in its conference contest to the Peacocks of Saint Peter’s University (6-15, 1-9 MAAC) in five sets (20-25, 25-13, 25-22, 23-25, 13-15) inside Draddy Gymnasium on Friday evening.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Manhattan set the tone offensively right away, capturing four of the first five points, capped off by a kill from Emma Francsconi.Â
Saint Peter’s then went on a run of their own, as Fiona VanDyke tied up the contest at 18-all.
Another key stretch, this time in the form of 7-2, put the curtains on the first set in favor of the Peacocks at 25-20.
The Jaspers came out strong in the second set, putting on a massive 16-4 advantage, as a dual block from Abby Morreale and Sarah Emmons ignited the Draddy faithful.
Despite Saint Peter’s creeping back into double digits late, two Hanna Kaczynska kills was enough to capture the next set, tying the match at one.Â
Even play persisted in the third, as the two sides tied five times before either grabbed their seventh point.Â
Back-to-back attack errors gave the Green and White their biggest lead of the set at 20-17.
With the Peacocks on the brink of closing in, Kaczynska clocked her 16th kill of the match to give Manhattan the 2-1 match advantage.
More back and forth play ensued in the fourth to start, but a Peacock dual block capped off five unanswered for a 16-10 margin.
Another block, this time coming from Kaczynska along with Katie Powers, tied the set at 23 to finish off a 6-2 run.
Two straight from Saint Peter’s courtesy of a final service ace from Elena Bilhartz sent the match to a decisive fifth set.Â
After tying at two, Manhattan once again took advantage of back-to-back attack errors to go up 5-2, forcing a Peacock timeout.
The road squad responded out of the timeout with six unanswered of their own, getting to within two of the win at 13-9.
Kaczynska and Powers continued the block party and put the Jaspers within one at 14-13.
One final kill from Saint Peter’s put the match away, giving the Peacocks their first conference win.
