It feels like Jersey City’s dining scene has been a bit of a revolving door lately, and another spot has quietly joined the list. Better Days, located at 143 Newark Avenue on the Newark Avenue Pedestrian Plaza, is now listed as permanently closed on Google. The bar + restaurant had been a go-to for drinks and casual bites in downtown Jersey City, though there are hints this might not be the final chapter for the space. Read on for what we know about the Better Days closure so far.
About Better Days
Better Days, a modern American bistro from the team behind 143 Social, officially opened its doors on February 26th, 2024. Located at 143 Newark Avenue in Jersey City, the restaurant took over the former Bareburger space on the main floor while keeping the speakeasy-style bar, 143 Social, operating downstairs. The concept offered a menu of modern American dishes spanning brunch, lunch, and dinner.

What We Know Now About the Closure + New Plans
Better Days is now listed as permanently closed on Google, which had our team digging a little deeper. About a week ago, the restaurant shared a video on social media that appeared to show renovations taking place inside the space. The caption read, “We’re laying the foundation for our next phase. Stay tuned as we build your next favorite dining destination.”
While it’s not yet clear what the next phase will be, the message suggests the team may be preparing for a new concept rather than closing for good. Downstairs, the speakeasy-style bar 143 Social still appears to be open and operating. Our team has reached out for more information and will update this story as we learn more.
