‘An honor and a privilege’ 

Brooklyn-born Jean-Jacques has served on the New York City Civil Court since 2023. Before becoming a judge, she worked extensively in the judicial system and legal practice, including roles such as principal law clerk to Hon. Francois Rivera in the Kings County Supreme Court, Civil Term. 

Jean-Jacques described herself as a person who values the law and the legal process.

“This is such an honor and a privilege,” she told the Brooklyn Eagle. “I’m so grateful for this opportunity. I hope to bring fairness and equity to my new role, and will work as hard and as expeditiously as I can.” 

Upcoming challenges 

Ruben currently serves as a judge on the New York City Family Court. She was first appointed in June 2015 and reappointed in late 2023 to continue her term.

Ruben began her legal career as a law clerk. She then worked as an associate in private law firms, focusing on matrimonial law and trusts and estates. She also devoted over 18 years to The Legal Aid Society’s Civil Division. 

“I’m so excited about the upcoming challenges,” Ruben told the Eagle. “I hope to be able to address some very old motions that haven’t been decided, and going forward, deliver fair decisions to make people feel comfortable in my courtroom. The goal is to treat everyone with dignity and respect.”
