Ice Jam Threatens Northern New York Communities

  • March 10, 2026

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The National Weather Service in Burlington has issued a Flash Flood Warning for East Central Clinton County due to a dangerous ice jam on the Saranac River that is rapidly raising water levels and threatening nearby communities.

The warning remains in effect until 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Emergency management reported the ice jam in Morrisonville is impounding water and causing the river to rise quickly upstream. Evacuations are currently underway along Ladue Street and River Street in Morrisonville.

Ice jams are unpredictable and can cause rapid, life-threatening fluctuations in water levels. Flash flooding near the ice jam poses an immediate threat to life and property.

If you’re in an evacuation zone, leave immediately and follow all instructions from local authorities. If you encounter flooded roads, turn around and do not attempt to drive through. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles trying to cross flooded roadways.

Obey all road closures. Water levels can change without warning due to the unpredictable nature of ice jams.

Stay with the First Alert Weather team for the latest updates on this developing situation.
