Camryn Ward and Mia McGregor each scored overtime winners as the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens opened the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference women’s hockey championship with back-to-back 2-1 victories over the Lakeland College Rustlers.

In Game 1 on Friday in Lloydminster, McGregor scored in regulation before Ward netted the overtime winner in the Queens’ 2-1 victory. Goaltender Tora Ward turned aside 33 shots for a .971 save percentage.

The teams met again Saturday at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in Red Deer, where the Queens again needed overtime to secure a 2-1 win and move ahead 2-0 in the best-of-five series.

Ward scored in the second period before McGregor ended the game in overtime. Tora Ward made another 33 saves in the win.

Kings advance after semifinal sweep

RED DEER, Alta. — The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings are headed to the ACAC men’s hockey championship after sweeping the Portage College Voyageurs in their best-of-three semifinal series.

The Kings opened the series Friday with an 8-2 win at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

Shayne Tibbles and Holden Knights each scored twice, while Mason Bueckert, Dawson Leroux, Tanner Sklaruk and Carter Cormier added singles. Goaltender Evan Fradette of St. Albert stopped 20 shots.

RDP completed the sweep Saturday with a 6-3 victory.

Alex Bernauer recorded a hat trick for the Kings, while Bueckert, Sklaruk and Knights also scored.

RDP Queens earn silver, Kings bronze at ACAC indoor track 

EDMONTON — The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens captured silver and the Kings claimed bronze at the ACAC Indoor Track Championships held March 7-8 at the Kinsmen Sports Centre.

Eiley Morrison won gold in the women’s 300 metres in 42.56 seconds.

Julianna Chipiuk captured gold in the women’s 3,000 metres in 11 minutes 9.23 seconds, while teammate Georgia Sawchuk earned silver in 11:22.52.

The Queens 4×200-metre relay team of Asia Perry, Jennifer Acainyah, Kammy Park and Morrison won bronze in 1:53.07.

On the men’s side, Japhet Kipkosgei earned silver in the 3,000 metres with a time of 9:08.89.

RDP Queens dance team collects medals

CALGARY — The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens dance team earned eight gold and three silver medals at the True West Dance Competition held March 7-8.

Gold medal performances came from Elise Arens, Aunika Heise, Meghan Walker, Siena Wald and Katarina Spiridakis, along with team victories in the jazz, contemporary and hip hop categories.

Silver medals were won by Christina Darby, the duo of Spiridakis and Walker, and the Queens trio team.

RDP choreography coach Macy Obara was also honoured with the True West Top Award.
