NEW YORK (PIX11) — The New York City Department of Transportation announced on Monday that it will be hosting a public workshop that would create a more permanent redesign of 14th Street in Manhattan.

The hope is that changes will liven up the neighborhoods that the thoroughfare crosses through, along with improving the quality of life and economic growth.

The first meeting will be on March 25 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., located at Pratt Institute, 144 West 14th Street.

For those who cannot attend the forum, a survey was created so that city planners can better understand how the 14th Street corridor is used.

The DOT is touting the success of the busway that was installed in 2019. The speeds for the bus lines along the 14th Street corridor rose from 4.6 mph in September 2019 to 6.1 mph in January 2026, according to data obtained by PIX11. Ridership, according to the DOT, has risen by as much as 30%.

Beyond the successes of the 14th Street busway, “We’re taking it to the next level with greenery, pedestrian space, and stronger safety infrastructure,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani said.

“Design features will include new landscaping, upgraded pedestrian, park, and plaza space, greenery, and safety enhancements that will all complement existing busway operations,” said in a statement by the city DOT.

The city and local community partnerships have committed $3 million to the study. The hope is that the city will have a plan on hand after the two-year study. The city has already secured $9.5 million for the project.
